Business locator tool

A data science agency worked with their client, an overseas government initiative to harness abundant data resources and develop an online tool aimed at assisting entrepreneurs.

Task

Work with both parties to conceptualize and create an online tool that aids entrepreneurs in identifying optimal business locations. Swiftly craft a high-fidelity prototype to showcase upcoming features at a trade show. Guide the client through the design process to deliver production-ready designs.

Actions

  • Conducted user and stakeholder interviews, developed personas, and gathered user insights during the Discovery phase.

  • Organized client workshops to define and prioritize potential features.

  • Generated low-fidelity wireframes and transformed them into detailed screens during Ideation and Delivery.

  • Collaborated with a data scientist and front-end developer to ensure technical feasibility.

  • Regular feedback sessions and client approvals for a seamless delivery

Results

By aligning the expertise of the data agency and the client, a user-centric tool emerged, addressing genuine user needs with available data resources. High-fidelity desktop and mobile designs were produced, showcasing an interactive map displaying businesses across the city. The map provided valuable insights for informed decision-making.

Challenges

Balancing information and aesthetics without compromising user experience required thoughtful consideration. To address this, map toggles were introduced, allowing users to personalize their view and layer information. Working within tight deadlines and a waterfall process led to user flow issues and rushed fixes. Leveraging established user patterns, innovative solutions were proposed to enhance the user experience.

Outcome

In essence, the collaboration produced an impactful tool that empowered entrepreneurs to make well-informed decisions while overcoming challenges through creative problem-solving and a user-centered design approach.
